Mitt Romney 'genuinely cares'
Wednesday, October 24, 2012 - 10:09 YouTube/Screenshot This ad from Crossroads GPS features Iraq War veteran Peter Damon veteran benefited from Romney's help. Mitt Romney hasn't talked much about his charitable work in public, and with outside spending focused on attack ads, even Republicans have been concerned that the GOP presidential nominee appears too aloof. Two new ads from outside spenders are hoping to change that. “ Genuinely Cares ” from the pro-Romney super PAC Restore Our Future and “ Mitt and David ” from the conservative nonprofit Crossroads GPS tell the stories of two individuals who received support from Romney. They are a sharp departure from both groups’ standard attack ads. Restore Our Future has spent a little more than $99 million thus far this election, with 86 percent going toward negative advertising and other campaign materials. “Genuinely Cares” features Army National Guard Sgt. Peter Damon, an Iraq War veteran, telling about how Gov. Romney ...

Dictators for Obama?
Tuesday, October 23, 2012 - 09:11 Chris Kleponis/AFP/Getty Images Evangelical leader Gary Bauer leads the Campaign for American Values PAC, which produced the ad "Dictator Vote." President Barack Obama has the dictator vote, at least according to a super PAC run by evangelical leader Gary Bauer. Hours before Obama and GOP nominee Mitt Romney began a debate on foreign policy, Bauer’s super PAC released an ad with quotes from Cuba’s Fidel Castro, Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, expressing their admiration for the president. “Obama secured the dictator vote,” the narrator says. “Does he have yours?” Bauer’s Campaign for American Values PAC has spent more than a half-million dollars on ads supporting Romney and opposing Obama. An August ad said Obama is “forcing gay marriage on the country.” Another accused the president of “bowing to Islam.” And a third ad asked, “Why was God booed by Obama’s delegates” at the Democratic ...

Koch-funded groups attack Obama for 'war on coal'
Thursday, October 18, 2012 - 10:01 YouTube/Screenshot Pro-coal nonprofits are pounding Obama with attack ads, including this new one from American Energy Alliance. Secretive nonprofits affiliated with oil and coal companies, including Koch Industries, are hitting President Barack Obama hard for what they call his “war on coal.” Yesterday, for example, the nonprofit American Energy Alliance reported that its new ad “ Stand with Coal ,” cost more than a half-million dollars and is running for two weeks in the coal-producing states of Ohio and Virginia. The ad accuses President Obama of wanting to bankrupt the coal industry, alleging that his plan is to “kill affordable energy.” The American Energy Alliance is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit, which means its donors remain unknown to the public. Its president, Thomas Pyle, is the former director of federal affairs for Koch Industries and former lobbyist for the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association. He also served as a ...

The "spring break" president?
Wednesday, October 17, 2012 - 09:30 YouTube/Screenshot Obama is accused of spending too much time on frivolous activities in a new attack ad from a tea party group. “It’s time to put the adults back in charge,” says the narrator of a new attack ad from a conservative political action committee. “Sometimes Barack Obama seems to confuse being president with being on spring break,” he continues. “It’s time to retire the beer-summit, spring-break presidency.” The Campaign to Defeat Barack Obama released this new advertisement just after the end second presidential debate Tuesday night, which saw Obama continue his campaign’s theme of painting GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney as out-of-touch and elitist. The ad takes the out-of-touch theme and turns it against Obama. The PAC’s ad notes that Obama has played more than 100 rounds of golf during his tenure. It also features clips of his “slow jamming the news” on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" and other ...

How Citizens United has transformed campaigns: An introduction to Big Sky, Big Money
Wednesday, October 10, 2012 - 15:09 Frontline About six months ago, we started a new project, a special collaboration with Frontline on PBS, to break through the noise around one key issue: super PACs. The issue is the fallout from the Supreme Court's decision two years ago in a case called Citizens United. The justices ruled that the government's not allowed to limit political spending by corporations and unions. Which mean this election cycle is being is fueled by more money than ever. Like, in the billions of dollars. Part of the noise -- part of the reason it matters -- is the disagreement over how much all that money matters. How it affects the way you and I vote. Whether money corrupts the entire political process in this country. For one side of that disagreement, a lawyer named James Bopp. "It doesn't corrupt the process," said Bopp. "It's necessary for the process. To communicate, you have to spend money, so you have to have money to communicate. See, and that's called speech." ...
