Turns Out You Won’t Get Rich Hunting Pythons in Florida’s Swamps
The Python Challenge sounded like a pretty bad idea. In reality, it was probably worse than most people imagined. Late last year, the state of Florida announced it would host a first-ever Python Challenge, a month-long contest in which participants are encouraged to patrol public hunting lands and kill non-native species of pythons. It’s been estimated that tens of thousands of these snakes now dwell in Florida’s swamps. The predators can easily reach lengths of 16 feet, and they’ve been blamed for the declining populations of rabbits, foxes, and raccoons. To get rid of the invasive serpents, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission decided to call on anyone and everyone adventurous (read: crazy) enough to head into the swamps and hunt snakes. The challenge officially kicked off on January 12. According to the Sun Sentinel, at least 1,563 hunters registered for the contest, which promises cash prizes, including $1,500 for most Burmese pythons caught and $1,000 for the ...

Is Herbalife a Pyramid Scheme, the Target of Market Manipulation, or Just a Good Gripping Yarn?
Australian money manager John Hempton has called the battle between investor Bill Ackman and nutritional supplement company Herbalife “hedge fund porn.” There is indeed something vaguely obscene about the ongoing drama, but the plot is much richer — and more interesting — than that of the typical skin flick. The Ackman/Herbalife tussle is probably more accurately compared to a Russian novel: complex and full of moral ambiguity. Here’s the backstory. Last month Ackman, CEO of the hedge fund Pershing Square Capital Management, explained to an investment conference in Manhattan why he had recently made what is essentially a $1 billion bet that Herbalife is a pyramid scheme that’s bound to collapse or be shut down by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The allegation is a function of the fact that, like companies such as Amway and Avon, Herbalife is a so-called multilevel marketing (MLM) firm. This basically means that it not only sells products to consumers through a network ...

Pro-Obama super PAC outpaces GOP counterpart
Monday, October 22, 2012 - 10:28 Justin Sullivan/Getty Images Pro-Mitt Romney super PAC Restore Our Future doubled its monthly hall but was outraised by its pro-Obama counterpart Priorities USA Action for the second month in a row. Restore Our Future , a super PAC supporting Mitt Romney’s candidacy, doubled its fundraising total in September. It took in $14.8 million , but was still outraised by the pro-President Barack Obama Priorities USA Action , which raised $15.3 million for the month. The totals show a reversal of a trend — Republicans to date have fared better at raising money for outside groups, though Romney still has American Crossroads, a well-funded super PAC, and Crossroads GPS, a nonprofit, in his corner. Restore Our Future brought in $7 million in August. Most of the major super PACs had until Saturday at midnight to file monthly reports with the Federal Election Commission on September’s fundraising activities. Meanwhile, J. Joe Ricketts, whose conservative Ending ...
