Whoever He Is, the President Elect Will Quickly Face an Economic Crisis
This election cycle has been so contentious, divisive, and relentless that most Americans will breathe a sigh of relief once it’s over. Vice President Joe Biden has said he plans to take a vacation three days after the election, but the President Elect will have no such chance to kick back. In fact, he will scarcely have time to catch his breath once the ballot counting is completed. For while the drama of this election has monopolized much of the media coverage in recent weeks, the U.S. is confronting a host of terribly difficult economic issues that will have to be dealt with early next year. Fortunately, the most daunting challenges facing the nation offer some breathing room. The current recovery has been the weakest since World War II, and the current unemployment rate is higher than it was the day that President Obama was sworn into office. Some experts say this is because the recession hit the financial and housing sectors unusually hard, doing structural damage that held back ...

Latino grocery chain faces immigration audit
Wednesday, October 17, 2012 - 10:46 Mi Pueblo A Mi Pueblo store in Tracy, Calif. Mi Pueblo was founded by a Mexican immigrant, and hires mostly Latino workers. Now, the Northern California supermarket is under a federal probe to expose undocumented workers. Mi Pueblo, a Latino supermarket chain with humble roots, faces the prospect of a mass layoff, a boycott and a federal investigation -- all because of questions about its employees’ legal status and right to work in the U.S. The Northern California grocery chain imports and produces a full spectrum of foods from Mexico. Its 21 stores, and counting, pop up in urban food deserts that stores like Safeway don’t touch. Mi Pueblo took some heat recently when the company voluntarily joined E-Verify , a federal program that screens job applicants’ immigration status against a federal database. Turns out it wasn’t so voluntary. The company revealed this month that U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, has launched an employee ...

Mitt Romney criticized over comments about taxes
Tuesday, September 18, 2012 - 04:39 Win McNamee/Getty Images Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney campaigns at Van Dyck Park September 13, 2012 in Fairfax, Va. Another day, and the news cycle is still in love with these comments from Mitt Romney, from a private fundraiser back in May. The video was put out there by the magazine Mother Jones. Romney says 47 percent of Americans pay no net income tax -- ergo, they are predisposed to vote for President Obama. We love to do the numbers here at Marketplace, so let's have a go at this one: According to Tax Policy Center, it’s actually “46.4” percent. About half these folks are poor, low-income or elderly. And the other half are mostly in the middle class. Roberton Williams is a senior fellow at the center. He says many of those folks may not pay federal income tax. But that isn't the whole story. "It’s very hard to avoid taxes, you buy a tank of gasoline, you pay a federal excise tax," Williams points out. "You buy cigarettes ...
