New Bluebird prepaid card is alternative to checking accounts
Tuesday, October 9, 2012 - 02:06 Bluebird by American Express and Walmart Walmart and American Express have teamed up to offer the new Bluebird card. They say it should help people avoid the high fees on checking accounts and debit cards. Fewer fees mean more customers. That’s the hypothesis behind a new prepaid card called Bluebird . It’s the product of an odd-couple partnership between elite financial services company, American Express, and populist low-cost retailer, Walmart. What makes the Bluebird card different? In a word: Fees. The prepaid card promises no minimum balance requirements, no monthly fees, no annual fees, and no overdraft fees. Dan Schulman with American Express says, “Last year, banks charged $31.6 billion in overdraft fees. And according to a recent Bank Rate study, the minimum balance average to avoid a maintenance fee is now $723.02. That’s up 23 percent from last year.” He says the typical non-interest-bearing checking account now has an average monthly ...

Nonprofit spends $8.2 million against Obama
Friday, September 28, 2012 - 09:11 YouTube/Screenshot Americans for Job Security enters the presidential election with an $8.2 million ad buy for "Running." Americans for Job Security , a conservative nonprofit organized as a trade association, reported that an ad criticizing President Barack Obama, titled “ Running ,” cost $8.2 million , a significant figure considering the group’s total take in its 2010 fiscal year was $12 million, according to its most recent tax filing . “Running,” released Wednesday, is the group’s first reported presidential ad of the election. It shows a mother jogging down the street as she says in the voiceover that she’s “running to forget” the bad economy, her husband’s layoffs and the national debt. “The future is getting worse under Obama,” she says. The ad is airing in six swing states. Americans for Job Security is run by president Stephen Demaura, the former director of the New Hampshire State Republican Committee, out of an Alexandria, ...

African-American youth seeing more alcohol ads
Thursday, September 27, 2012 - 00:12 Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images A customer walks out of Tom Liquor store located at the intersection of Florence and Normandy Avenues in South Los Angeles. Young African-Americans are being exposed to substantially more ads for alcohol than the rest of their peers, according to report by the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. Federal health officials had already estimated one in three African-American high school students drinks, and Johns Hopkins health and behavior expert David Jernigan thinks his study helps explain why. "If you've got a group of young people like African-American youth that consume more media," he says, "they're going to get even more exposed." Alcohol ads aimed at an African-American audience are widespread. Rapper Ice Cube appears in a series of TV commercials for "super cold" Coors Light. Hip-hop artists Snoop Dogg and Ludacris endorse different brands of cognac in videos posted to YouTube. Ludacris declares that his favorite ...

Will New York be next for the fracking-fueled job boom?
Tuesday, September 18, 2012 - 11:32 Spencer Platt/Getty Images A hydraulic fracturing site. A fracking-fueled job boom has erupted in parts of the U.S. and wages of gas workers have increased. But in New York fracking is banned. That hasn’t stopped an upstate New York school from offering training courses for work in gas fields, because many expect Gov. Andrew Cuomo to lift the ban. Natural gas drilling using hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is banned in New York State. But that hasn’t stopped an upstate New York educational organization from offering training courses for work in natural gas fields. For $1,000, students can enroll in the five week Gas Industry Careers course that teaches technical skills used in natural gas extraction, like basic welding and rough terrain forklift driving. Dick Lindhorst, coordinator of adult job training for the Broome-Tioga Board of Education Services, says job seekers in his region near the Pennsylvania border will be prepared when the fracking ...
